Question 1

What is shadowing, and does it actually work?

Shadowing is listening to a line of real speech and saying it back immediately, copying the rhythm and the sounds rather than translating. It works because you are training your mouth against a model instead of studying rules about it, and because you hear the gap between the two straight away. Lang Shadow supplies the material, the playback controls and the scoring, so the comparison is not just your own impression.

How do I practise English speaking on my own?

Speak out loud against a recording and get something objective back. In Lang Shadow that means picking a Short, a podcast line or your own text, saying it, and reading the score on every word. You never need a partner or a scheduled lesson, which is the usual reason speaking practice stops.

How does the pronunciation scoring work?

Accepted Answer

Every line you say comes back with three numbers and a colour on each word. The numbers are accuracy, fluency and completeness; the colours mark each word as landed, shaky or missed. Tap a word and you hear it said properly and see the phonemes you actually produced, so you know which sound to work on next rather than just that something was wrong.

What is there to shadow?

Short clips and full podcast episodes of real English, not scripted textbook audio. On a Short the clip stops on every line and waits for your turn, and when you reach the end you can play the whole thing back with your own voice dubbed over it. Podcasts come with the complete transcript, an AI summary and a playlist, and any line there can be recorded and scored too. Every line carries a translation underneath it and can be slowed to 0.8x or 0.6x.

Can I practise on my own text?

Yes. Paste an email, a chat thread or a paragraph from work, or photograph a printed page and let the camera read the text off it. It becomes a bilingual script you read aloud and are scored on line by line, with the same speed controls and record-and-compare as the video content. Ready-made tasks are there if you would rather be given one.

Who is Emma, and what can I talk to her about?

Accepted Answer

Emma is the 3D AI tutor you act out scenes with by voice. Shadowing trains the sound; Emma trains the conversation. She plays the other person in a situation you pick — the café, the interview, a neighbour making small talk — and you play yourself: some turns you choose your line from what she offers and say it, some you echo her line back, and some you answer in your own words and she takes it from there.

What else can I practise besides shadowing?

Five places to open your mouth, one per tab. Shadow is Shorts and podcasts line by line. Say It turns your own text — pasted, or photographed off a printed page — into a script you read aloud. Scenes are the ones you act out with Emma. Goals turns one real-life goal into four short games ending in a certificate. Notebook deals your own mistakes back at you as word games and cards you say out loud.

Can I hear myself speaking over the video?

Yes — that is what the dub is. Shadow your way through a Short and the app keeps every take, then plays the clip back with the original voice muted and yours in its place. Hearing your own line where the native line used to be is the fastest way to notice the rhythm you flattened, which no score on its own tells you.

What happens to the mistakes I make?

They are saved for you automatically. Mispronounced words, grammar slips and vocabulary gaps go into your notebook with the sentence they came from and the phonemes involved, without you filing anything. They then come back in word games and in later scenes until they stop being mistakes.

How do I know I am improving?

Accepted Answer

Every line you say is scored the moment you say it, and the app keeps the count. Each word comes back green, amber or red with accuracy, fluency and completeness behind it; the same speaking earns XP that fills your level ring, closes the day's missions and puts you on that week's board. Goals end in a certificate at a CEFR level, so there is something to point at rather than a feeling that it is going alright.

How is Lang Shadow different from ELSA Speak, Duolingo or Speak?

The difference is what you practise on. Pronunciation apps mostly drill isolated words and set phrases; course apps teach through exercises and written dialogue. Lang Shadow scores you on real material — Shorts, podcasts and text you supplied yourself — and keeps the same word-level scoring inside the scenes you act out with an AI tutor, so drilling, listening and talking are the same loop rather than three separate apps.

How much time does it take?

A few minutes is enough to get something back. Open the app, say a few lines out loud, close it: there is no lesson to sit through and no course to finish, and every sentence is scored the moment you say it. Daily missions, a streak and a board that resets every Monday are there if you want a reason to come back — and the streak survives a missed day if you have earned a freeze.

Which languages does it explain in?

Over 120 mother tongues. You set yours once during onboarding, and from then on every line — a Short's subtitle, a podcast transcript, your own pasted text, Emma's lines in a scene — carries a translation beside it. English is what you are learning; your own language is how everything is explained.

Question 14

Is Lang Shadow free, and how much is Plus?

You can practise every day for free, with daily limits and no card. Plus raises those daily limits, turns scoring on in the modes that are practice-only for free accounts, and unlocks the premium AI voices; it works out at about $4 a month when you take the annual plan, and monthly and six-month plans are available in the app. Cancel anytime.

Question 15

What happens to my voice recordings?

They are processed for pronunciation scoring and discarded by default. Lang Shadow does not sell or share your data, and you can delete your account and everything attached to it at any time in Settings. Full details are in the privacy policy.

Question 16

Can I cancel anytime?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Cancel through the App Store or Google Play, the same way you manage any other subscription. You keep Plus until the end of the period you already paid for, and nothing is charged after that.

Question 17

Which devices does it run on, and do I need internet?

Accepted Answer

iOS 15.5 and later, Android 8 and later, with one account across both. An internet connection is needed for fresh content, transcripts, pronunciation scoring and calls with Emma, because the scoring and the tutor both run server-side.
