Questions about Lang Shadow
What is shadowing, and does it actually work?
Shadowing is listening to a line of real speech and saying it back straight away, copying the rhythm and the sounds rather than translating. It works because you train your mouth against a model instead of studying rules about it, and because you hear the gap between the two immediately. Lang Shadow supplies the material, the pause for your turn and the scoring, so the comparison is not just your own impression.
How do I practise English speaking on my own?
Speak out loud against real English and get something objective back. In Lang Shadow that means picking a Short, a scene or something you needed to say yourself, saying it, and reading the score on every word. You never need a partner or a scheduled lesson, which is the usual reason speaking practice stops.
How does the pronunciation scoring work?
Every line you say comes back with three numbers and a colour on each word. The numbers are accuracy, fluency and rhythm; a word at 80 or above is green, 50 to 79 is orange, and under 50 is red. Tap a red word to hear it said properly and see which sound inside it let you down, and the line also marks where two words should have run together and where you should have paused.
What is there to shadow?
Real English Shorts, and full podcast episodes to listen along to, not scripted textbook audio. A Short plays each line, then stops and waits for your turn and scores what you say; any line can drop to 0.8x or 0.6x, and every line has a translation under it. Podcasts come with the complete transcript, play as video or audio only, keep going in the background while you walk or cook, and have a sleep timer.
Can I hear my own voice in place of the original?
Yes — that is My voice. Record your lines, turn My voice on, and the clip plays back with your takes where the original lines were. It works in Shorts, in role plays and in How to Talk, and hearing yourself where a native speaker used to be is the fastest way to notice the rhythm you flattened, which no score on its own tells you.
Can I practise saying things I actually need to say?
Yes — that is the How to Talk tab. Say or type what you need in your own language and it comes back in English, in the tone you choose (natural, casual, professional, confident, storytelling, for kids or IELTS) and at your level. You read it out loud line by line, each line is scored as you go, and you can film yourself saying it and watch it back later.
Can I use it to prepare for IELTS Speaking?
Yes, for the part of the test you cannot revise from a book: saying it out loud. How to Talk has topics for IELTS Speaking Part 1, Part 2 and Part 3 and an IELTS tone, so you can build an answer from what you would say in your own language, then read it aloud and be scored on pronunciation, fluency and rhythm. It is not an exam course and it does not give you a band score; the same practice helps with TOEIC Speaking, but there are no TOEIC-specific topics.
Can it help me with my accent?
Yes, one sound at a time, which is how an accent actually changes. The app colours all 41 English sounds by how you say them, so you can see which few are holding you back. Open one and you get a clip of the mouth making it, where the tongue and lips go, words to try it in, and a note on the mistake speakers of your language usually make. The aim is not to erase how you sound; it is to be understood the first time.
What are the 41 sounds of English?
They are every sound American English is made of: 12 vowels, 5 diphthongs and 24 consonants. Lang Shadow uses the General American set, where ɝ (as in bird) and ɚ (as in teacher) stand in for the r-coloured vowels of British English, which is why the count is 41 rather than the 44 often quoted. Every one of them has its own page in the sound guide on this site, with how to make it and a clip of the mouth.
Who is Emma, and what can I do with her?
Emma is the 3D tutor who plays the other person in a role play. You pick a place — home, food, shopping, travel, the doctor, work and school, or on the phone — and she stays in character while you play yourself. Each turn you pick one of the lines on offer, repeat hers, or say something of your own, and whatever you say out loud is scored.
What is in the app, tab by tab?
Six tabs. Shorts and Podcast are the real English you shadow and listen to. Role Play is the scenes you act out with Emma. How to Talk turns what you wanted to say into English you can read aloud. My voice is your pronunciation: a quick check on any sentence, your 41 sounds and your past checks. Saved keeps the sentences, words, Shorts, podcasts and channels you kept.
What happens to the words and phrases I save?
They wait for you in Saved, with the sentence they came from. Tap any phrase in a transcript and you get how to say it, what it means and an example in your own language, and one tap keeps it. Saved words come back in a short daily word game, so they keep turning up until they stick.
How do I know I am improving?
Every line you say is scored the moment you say it, and My voice keeps your past checks with how much each one moved since your last try. Your 41 sounds change colour as they improve, and the scores behind them are folded over your last 30 days, so they show how you speak now rather than everything you have ever recorded.
How long before my pronunciation improves?
You will hear the difference on a single line the first day; the colours across your 41 sounds move over weeks, not hours. The learners who move fastest are not the ones who practise longest in one sitting, but the ones who say a few lines most days — which is why anything you practise in a day keeps your streak going.
How is Lang Shadow different from ELSA Speak, Duolingo or Speak?
The difference is what you practise on. Pronunciation apps mostly drill isolated words and set phrases; course apps teach through exercises and written dialogue. Lang Shadow scores you on real material — Shorts, scenes and the things you actually need to say — with the same word-level scoring everywhere, so listening, drilling and talking are one loop rather than three separate apps.
How much time does it take?
Five minutes a day is enough. Open the app, say a few lines out loud, close it: there is no lesson to sit through and no course to finish. Anything you practise that day keeps your streak, and with Plus a day you miss is frozen instead of lost.
Which languages does it explain in?
Over 120 mother tongues, including Arabic, Spanish, Portuguese, Hindi, Vietnamese, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Turkish, French and Russian. You set yours once during onboarding, and from then on every line — a Short's subtitle, a podcast transcript, a phrase you saved, Emma's lines in a scene — carries a translation beside it. English is what you are learning; your own language is how everything is explained.
Is Lang Shadow free, and how much is Plus?
You can practise every day for free, with daily limits and no card. Plus raises those limits, reads lines to you in the Plus voice and freezes your streak on a day you miss; in the US it works out at about $4 a month on the annual plan, prices are set locally in each country, and monthly and six-month plans are in the app too. Cancel anytime.
What happens to my voice recordings?
They are processed for pronunciation scoring and discarded by default; the takes My voice plays back are kept on your phone. Lang Shadow does not sell or share your data, and you can delete your account and everything attached to it at any time in Settings. Full details are in the privacy policy.
Can I cancel anytime?
Yes. Cancel through the App Store or Google Play, the same way you manage any other subscription. You keep Plus until the end of the period you already paid for, and nothing is charged after that.
Which devices does it run on, and do I need internet?
iPhone on iOS 15.5 or later and Android 7.0 or later, with one account across both. An internet connection is needed for new content, transcripts, pronunciation scoring and role plays, because the scoring and the tutor both run on our servers.
